The Understanding of Narcissism in Psychoanalytic Self Psychology

Abstract
The prominent symptoms of narcissism are extremely self-centered exhibitionism and grandiosity, but these are defensive maneuvers against the anxiety of self-disintegration, underneath of which prevailed emptiness and depression exist. Narcissism
is the
disorder of narcissistic libido. If the baby develops it normally under the adequate parental empathic environment, the narcissistic libido becomes fuel of life and contribute to joy and zest of life, motivation and initiative of work, and
maintaining
of self-esteem, but if there is serious empathic failure of the parents, it pathologically attached to archaic narcissistic structures (grandiose self and idealized parent imago), which cannot be integrated into the rest of personality as an
integrated
self and remain as a pathological narcissism. The technique of analytic therapy for narcissism emphasizes on the therapist's empathy based on the pathogenetic theory of narcissism. It consisted of two steps; the reactivation of archaic
narcissistic
structures in the amalgamation of narcissistic transferential relationship with the therapist, and the empathic interpretation of the structures.
